Spinmotive force

Ieda, Junichi; Maekawa, Sadamichi

Spin Current (2nd Edition), p.69 - 92, 2017/11

This chapter reviews spinmotive force (SMF), which is an emerging concept that is responsible for generating spin current and electric voltage in magnetic conductors. The SMF is induced in magnetic nanostructures via the exchange interaction between conduction spin and magnetization. Various types of the spin electric fields are found: adiabatic, nonadiabatic, and their spin-orbit coupled equivalents. In experiment, the adiabatic contributions with/without spin-orbit coupling have been observed whereas detecting nonadiabatic effects is challenging. The SMF offers electrical detection of magnetization dynamics, which would allow us to monitor the elusive dynamics of antiferromagnets.

Optimization techniques of the vacuum insulation design have been developed in order to realize a reliable voltage holding capability of Multi-Aperture Multi-Grid accelerators for giant negative ion sources for nuclear fusion. In this method, the nested multilayer configuration of each acceleration stage in the MAMuG accelerator can be uniquely designed to satisfy the target voltage within given boundary conditions. The evaluation of the voltage holding capabilities of each acceleration stages were based on the past experimental results of the area effect and the multi-aperture effect on the voltage holding capability. Moreover, total voltage holding capability of multi-stage was estimated by taking the multi-stage effect into account, which was experimentally obtained in this time. In this experiment, the multi-stage effect appeared as the superposition of breakdown probabilities in each acceleration stage, which suggested that multi-stage effect can be considered as the voltage holding capability of the single acceleration gap having the total area and aperture. The analysis on the MAMuG accelerator for JT-60SA agreed with the past gap-scan experiments with an accuracy of less than 10% variation.

The flat-top acceleration system with the fifth-harmonic of the fundamental frequency has been designed to minimize energy spread for the microbeam production in the JAERI AVF cyclotron. In principle, the amplitude of the fifth-harmonic voltage is $$frac{1}{25}$$ of fundamental one to obtain a uniform energy gain distribution, but in reality the voltage ratio for the optimum flat-top acceleration doesn't correspond to $$frac{1}{25}$$, because an accelerating voltage distribution depends on a radial position and the dee angle. The optimum voltage ratio has been investigated for every accelerating condition by shifting a magnet field from isochronism. The energy spread of 2$$times$$10$$^{-4}$$ can be achieved even in non-isochronous condition by changing an initial beam phase and an outermost trim coil field.
